Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, stated in February 2026: “Most jobs where you sit at a computer — lawyers, accountants, project managers, marketing people — will be fully automated within 12 to 18 months.” You still think it won’t happen to you.
The numbers nobody wants to hear
In 2025, US employers announced 1,206,374 job cuts — a 58% increase over 2024. That’s the highest level since the 2020 pandemic. And it’s only the beginning.
| Quarter | Announced job cuts (US) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 2025 | 497,052 | Highest Q1 since the pandemic |
| Q2 2025 | 247,256 | Highest Q2 since the pandemic |
| Q3 2025 | 202,118 | Accelerating in the tech sector |
| Q4 2025 | 259,948 | Highest Q4 since 2008 |
| Total 2025 | 1,206,374 | +58% vs 2024 |
| January 2026 | 108,435 | Highest January since 2009 |

Of the total, 54,836 layoffs were directly attributed to AI — 12 times more than two years ago. The tech sector alone announced 153,536 cuts, up 17% from 2024.
But these aren’t just Silicon Valley numbers. These are accountants in Dallas, marketers in Chicago, translators in New York. People who thought: “But it won’t happen to me.”
Profession by profession: Who’s on the chopping block
An analysis of 180 million job postings and employment data reveals a disturbing pattern:
| Profession | Demand decline / Risk | What’s already happening |
|---|---|---|
| Graphic designers | -33% (2025) | Declining for second consecutive year (-12% in 2024, -33% in 2025) |
| Copywriters & technical writers | -28% (2025) | AI generates 25% of content; freelancers losing clients |
| Photographers | -28% (2025) | AI generates stock photos and product images |
| Customer service | ~700 replaced per company | Klarna: AI chatbot does the work of 700 agents |
| Translators | 50-70% income drop | Freelancer: “AI is 95% of my work, income halved” |
| HR & recruitment | 85% screening automated | 90% of benefits administration automated by 2027 |
| Accounting | High risk | Bookkeeping, payroll, data collection — all automated |
| Legal services | High risk | Document review and routine analysis already done by AI |
| Marketing | High risk | Suleyman: “Marketing will be automated in 18 months” |

White-collar workers: The quiet disappearance
White-collar employment peaked in November 2022. Since then, it has fallen 1.9%. Job postings for white-collar roles dropped 35.8% between Q1 2023 and Q1 2025.
Professional services job growth is declining at 11% per year. Recent college graduate unemployment is approaching 6%.
This isn’t a recession. It’s a structural shift. The jobs that disappear — they’re not coming back.
Case studies: When corporations tell the truth
Klarna: CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski announced that an AI chatbot had taken over the work of 700 customer service agents. The company shrank from 7,000 employees (2022) to 3,000, with plans to drop below 2,000 by 2030. The irony: they later admitted the AI chatbot was “lower quality” and started hiring humans again. The damage was already done.
Duolingo: CEO Luis von Ahn announced an “AI-first” strategy — gradually eliminating all contract work that AI can handle. In January 2024, 10% of contract workers were cut. He later walked back the statement. The contract workers who lost their jobs didn’t get an apology.
Accenture: Laid off 11,000 people in December 2025. The CEO’s statement: “Those we cannot reskill will be exited.” Direct. No euphemisms.
Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Google: All cite AI as the reason for cuts. Combined: hundreds of thousands of jobs.
“But that’s America. It won’t happen here.”
Europe is always 12-18 months behind America in technology adoption. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace warns: “How Europe Can Survive the AI Labor Transition” — the title alone says enough.
European Commission data (12,000+ firms): AI increases productivity by ~4%, but no significant job losses yet. Key word: yet.
Here’s how the timeline plays out:
- 2023-2024: US companies experiment with AI tools
- 2025: Mass layoffs in the US — 1.2 million cuts
- 2026: European companies start adopting the same tools
- 2027-2028: Europe goes through what America is experiencing now
A mid-sized European company running SAP, with a marketing department, customer service, accounting, and legal — every one of those departments is exposed. Not in ten years. In two.
5 million jobs: The math is merciless
Microsoft’s 2025 data shows: 5 million white-collar jobs — management analysts, customer service reps, sales engineers — face extinction as AI creates “the greatest deflationary force in human history.”
The International Monetary Fund estimates that 40% of global employment is exposed to AI, rising to 60% in advanced economies.
Mustafa Suleyman says 12-18 months. McKinsey says by 2030. Morgan Stanley says: “You won’t retire early — you’ll have to retrain for jobs that don’t exist yet.”
Regardless of who’s right about the timeline — the direction is clear. And no profession behind a computer screen is immune.
What “but it won’t happen to me” actually means
It means you haven’t been paying attention.
It means you think your profession is somehow special — that your years of experience, your degree, your knowledge of local regulations form a protective wall. They don’t. AI doesn’t respect seniority, reputation, or diplomas.
AI respects only one thing: can it do the task faster and cheaper.
And in an increasing number of cases — it can.
This isn’t an article telling you to learn to prompt ChatGPT. This is an article telling you that the wave has already hit America, that the data is publicly available, and that Europe — including your country — is not an exception. Just later.
The only question is: Will you be ready when it arrives, or will you keep repeating “but it won’t happen to me”?
